This is My Security (poster)
Statement by Slava Greenberg, creator of the Poster “This is My Security”
Israel is a country that has been at war most of its years. As a result the Army has become extremely central in the Israeli society. and pushes aside important civil issues. The public discussions on security for the citizens tend to be limited to militaristic issues that focus on how to defend from enemies from outside. Other issues that are crucial to one’s feeling of security are pushed aside – education, culture, health and occupation. Meanwhile life-saving medicines for women's illnesses are not included in the national health insurance, education and occupation are privatized, girls are brought up feeling ashamed of their bodies and scared of going outside when it's dark, nine women were killed by their partners who worked in private security companies.
The poster tries to expand the term "security" so that is can include more than one aspect. The poster can serve as a tool for teachers to start a discussion with their students about all the different meanings of the term "security". The poster encourages students to form their own perspectives on what is security, after analyzing the hegemonic perception.
I am a student majoring in Communication in Education at the Academic College for Education – Oranim. I'm active in the Coalition of Women for Peace in Israel. The Coalition chose a campaign for the upcoming year that will challenge the narrow perception of security, so that it would include civil issues and not only militant ones. Examples of excluded issues include civil equality (for all citizens), security for women from sexual violence, economic security, security and peace, etc. The poster aims to make these issues accessible for students and teachers.
