Protest convoy to Erez Crossing, Nov. 11, 2006

The initiative for this activity came from the Coalition for Jerusalem, a coalition of Palestinian organizations in Jerusalem: http://coalitionforjerusalem.blogspot.com They invited the organizing committee of the End the Siege on Gaza Campaign to join them in a protest action immediately following the massacre at Beit Hanoun. Representatives of the Palestinian coalition iterated the urgent need to convey an immediate message to the people of the Gaza Strip that the anti-Occupation movements in the West Bank and in Israel stand with them in solidarity, and in vehement protest against the recent Israeli attack. This was our first joint action with the Palestinian coalition. The action is a part of the month-long campaign (November) of protest activities under the heading Gaza - Stop the Siege! Stop the War! On Saturday, November 11th 2006, two convoys of cars bearing black flags and posters (designed for us by David Tartakover) took off, about 20 vehicles from Jerusalem and 20 from Tel Aviv. The two groups joined up at Yad Mordechai Junction, and proceeded as one cavalcade to the Erez Crossing. There we held a protest rally (over 200 people): short speeches were made by Palestinian and Israeli representatives, and the participants called out slogans in Arabic, English and Hebrew, waving banners and posters. The activity was coordinated with the police, which did not interfere at any point. Hadash Knesset member Dov Hanin took part in the convoy.

Media coverage: Since a car-convoy to Erez Crossing has already been scheduled for November 18th 2006, organized by Peace Now as part of the month-long Gaza - Stop the Siege! Stop the War campaign, we chose not to contact Israeli media about the present convoy, in order not to upstage these plans. We did, however, contact Palestinian, Arab and international media. At Yad Mordechai Junction we were met by the Russian International Television RTVI crew who came to interview and film us as a convoy. More television crews from Egypt, Abu Dhabi and other international cameramen came to the Erez Crossing. The convoy was reported by Israeli radio news, Palestinian news agencies, Palestinian radio and Shams radio station. Palestinian coverage was limited to the prominent event of the day – Arafat's memorial in Ramallah.

On the whole people felt the action had been a success, especially having been organized at such short notice. It was important for us to respond to the appeal of the Palestinian Coalition for Jerusalem and join them in this action. We hope that next week's cavalcade will be at least as large and receive extensive coverage in the Israeli media.
