TANDI – Movement of Democratic Women for Israel [contact]

Who we are:

TANDI is an alliance of two organizations: Women’s Awakening, founded in 1948 as an Arab women’s organization, and the Progressive Democratic Organization of Jewish Women. Both had the same goals and mission, and believed that banding together would contribute to the success of their activities. As a result, TANDI: Movement of Democratic Women for Israel was created.

Our mission:

In 1973, a TANDI committee proposed the following goals, which were ratified and signed by some five thousand women:

1.A just peace in the region and the world, with coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis.

2.Equal rights for women in all areas of life – society, politics, and the work place.

3.Protection of children's rights and ensuring them a future of peace and security.

Our main objectives and activities:

  • The Palestinian people have a right to an independent state beside the state of Israel as a way to resolve the conflict in the region and achieve a just peace.
  • We join together with like-minded women’s organizations in Israel, such as the Coalition of Women for Peace, Women in Black, Bat Shalom and others.
  • We are networked with women's organizations worldwide; we participate in international women’s conferences and our movement is a member of the International Federation of Democratic Women.
  • TANDI participates in advocating for the just national rights of Arabs in Israel, and for complete equality in Israel for Arabs and all other minorities.
  • TANDI opposes transfer, racism, house demolitions and land expropriation.
  • We advocate for the right of all citizens to healthcare, education, and individual development as appropriate for modern times.
  • We demand equal opportunities for women in jobs and salaries.
  • We raise awareness to the social, economic and political rights of women through conferences, courses, workshops, meetings and lectures.
  • TANDI members organize meetings in their homes to teach women about their rights and how to protect themselves from violence, harassment, and sexual or physical abuse.
  • TANDI condemns all forms of violence against women, including murder referred to as “honor killing”.
  • TANDI condemns all forms of community or clan segregation.
  • We work for children's rights in many ways: Every June 1, we celebrate International Children's Day by arranging carnivals and festivals for them.
  • We created 30 kindergartens in towns and villages where they didn't previously exist, including places where Arab and Jewish children live together. These kindergartens are also used for courses to teach women about children's education and health.
  • TANDI co-sponsors children’s day camps in the summer together with other organizations.
  • TANDI celebrates International Women's Day on March 8 by organizing demonstrations and encouraging our branches to hold general meetings to discuss the advancement of women.
  • Every year, we distribute brochures and booklets in Arabic and Hebrew with articles and literary work by women. We also write and distribute an annual report that reviews our main activities of the year.

We call upon all women to join this powerful movement. There is room for every woman who believes in our principles and wishes to support them.
